CCTV for Farms & Smallholdings in South Africa
Rural properties bring security challenges that a suburban camera kit was never designed for: long perimeters, poor lighting, unreliable power and patchy connectivity. This guide covers how we approach farm and smallholding CCTV across North West and South Africa.
Cover the right points, not the whole fence
Trying to watch every metre of a farm boundary is expensive and rarely useful. Effective farm CCTV concentrates on choke points: gates and entrances, the yard and homestead, sheds and workshops, fuel and equipment stores, and access roads.
A smaller number of well-placed, higher-quality cameras beats a large number of cheap ones spread thin.
Cameras that work in real rural conditions
Farm sites need cameras chosen for the environment:
- Infrared / low-light cameras for unlit yards and approaches
- Weatherproof (IP-rated) housings for dust, sun and rain
- Higher-resolution or AI cameras where you need to identify people or vehicles, not just detect motion
- A recorder (DVR/NVR) with enough storage to keep days or weeks of footage
Power and connectivity off the grid
Cameras are only as reliable as their power. On farms we frequently pair CCTV with solar and battery backup so surveillance keeps running through load-shedding and in areas with no mains. For remote viewing, we plan around the connectivity you actually have — LTE router, point-to-point wireless, or fibre where available.
Because SST does both solar and security, one team can power and protect the site without you juggling contractors.
Frequently asked questions
Can CCTV keep working during load-shedding?
Yes. We back cameras and the recorder with battery (and often solar) so surveillance stays up through outages — the times a site is most vulnerable.
How many cameras does a farm need?
Fewer than most people expect. We prioritise gates, the yard, stores and access roads with well-placed cameras rather than trying to watch the whole boundary. A site survey sets the exact number.
Can I view the cameras from my phone?
Yes, provided the site has connectivity (LTE, wireless link or fibre). We configure secure remote viewing as part of the install.
Do you install CCTV on farms in North West?
Yes — farm and mine security is a core part of what we do from our Rustenburg base, and we travel for larger sites nationwide.
